Three AI Job Search Prompts to Use to Find Your Next Job

More and more people are using LLMs (large language models) to write their resume and/or cover letter with estimates ranging anywhere from 40-70% of people saying they've used one in their job search. While the success rates for using LLMs in a job search isn't clear, the wide usage suggests it may be making the job search faster and easier. However, many employers are reporting lower quality applications that include inaccurate or misleading information. This may mean that using AI to write your resume can give you an advantage in a job search but only if you're using it correctly. Success may come down to using solid prompts combined with good old fashioned human brain power.

With that in mind, I've provided a few AI prompts that you can use to boost your job search. Some of the more known LLMs include ChatGPT and Claude.ai but feel free to try the prompts in the one of your choice, or try a few and compare results.

Prompt for generating a job market analysis:

AI tools aren't just for writing resumes and cover letters. They could also be useful in planning a job search. The following prompt can be used to help you understand the current job market trends on a national or local level, identify your competitive advantages, and start a list of target employers. Simply input your information in the brackets to tailor the output to suit your needs.

Write a concise and accurate job market analysis for a [Job Title] in [Chosen Location] with [Number of years] years of experience, a [Level of Education], and the following top certifications or skills: [Short list of top certifications or skills].

Answer only the following questions clearly and factually:

  1. What salary range should I target for this role based on my experience, location, and qualifications?

  2. What are the top 10 required skills for a [Job Title]?

  3. What is the number one most sought-after skill for this job right now?

  4. What is a potential competitive advantage a candidate like me might have in this market?

  5. What are the current hiring trends for the [Industry] industry in [Current Year]?

  6. What are the hiring and layoff patterns for the [Industry] industry this year?

  7. Is the [Industry] industry growing, contracting, or remaining stable over the next few years?

  8. Is this a good time to search in this field?

  9. What are the top 5 job markets or cities for this job?

  10. Which 15 companies should I focus on applying to?

  11. What is a realistic timeline and job level for me to target, given my background and current market conditions?

  12. What are the top 5 job titles or variations I should use on job boards for this type of role?

  13. How should I adapt my job search strategy to account for the impacts of AI on this specific job, the [Industry] industry, and the job market as a whole?

Ensure all insights are based on the most current and reliable data available, and write the analysis in a concise, professional, and actionable tone suitable for an experienced job seeker.

Prompt for LinkedIn Profile Optimization including job descriptions:

Besides your resume, you'll likely need to update your LinkedIn profile during a job search too. You can give the LLM your resume, and maybe even some target job descriptions, and use the below prompt to give you a draft for updating your LinkedIn profile. Many people put off updating their LinkedIn because they aren't sure what to write. If that's you, give this prompt a try. You can make changes to your LinkedIn as much as you need to find what works for you.

I’m uploading my resume. Please use it to write a LinkedIn profile optimized for recruiter search visibility for roles in program management, data analysis, and learning & development within large global organizations or the tech industry.

Before writing the profile:

  • Pull and analyze three recent job descriptions for roles similar to mine (e.g., Program Manager, HR Data Analyst, Learning & Development Program Manager) from major job boards or reputable company career sites.

  • Identify the most frequently recurring keywords, competencies, and qualifications across those descriptions.

  • Cite the specific job titles, companies, and/or posting sources used for the analysis to ensure transparency and confirm relevance.

  • Integrate the recurring language, priorities, and skills naturally throughout the profile to reflect current market demand and LinkedIn recruiter search algorithms.

The profile should include:

  • A headline packed with high-traffic, recruiter-searched keywords (e.g., Program Management, HR Analytics, Learning & Development, Employee Experience, Process Optimization, Stakeholder Management, Data Visualization, Change Management).

  • An About section that weaves in those keywords while showcasing my professional achievements, leadership style, and data-driven impact.

  • Keyword-rich Experience section summaries that emphasize measurable outcomes, scope, tools, and organizational impact.

  • A Skills list aligned with LinkedIn’s most-searched and endorsed terms for my target roles.

  • Identification of the top five most strategic skills I should prioritize to increase recruiter visibility and accurately represent my expertise.

  • Optional: a concise personal tagline suitable for a modern, senior-level LinkedIn profile.

The final profile should sound authentic, professional, and polished — not like a keyword dump — while clearly enhancing search visibility and appealing to recruiters hiring in program management, data analysis, HR operations, learning & development, and talent optimization.

Prompt for writing an accomplishment statement:

The most challenging part of a resume for many people to write are the accomplishment statements. It's not necessarily easy to construct a sentence that demonstrates the value you bring to the company through your work. If you need to write your resume accomplishment statements, try spending some time free writing about one specific accomplishment at a time with focus on as many details as you can remember; who did your work impact, what did you do, when and where did you do it, what challenges did you face, and perhaps most importantly, why did you do it. Once you have a full paragraph or page of details, use it as input along with the prompt below to see if the LLM is able to streamline your work into a clear, crisp, and concise accomplishment statement you can use in your resume. This approach might give you better results than asking AI to write your entire resume.

Using the following input, write three distinct and compelling accomplishment statements that follow the RAP model (Results → Action → Purpose).

Each statement must:

  • Start with the quantifiable or measurable result achieved.

  • Describe the key actions taken to achieve that result, using strong, active verbs.

  • End with the purpose or value of the achievement — what it meant for the organization, customers, or team.

  • Be concise, professional, and achievement-focused, written in resume tone (no “I” or “my”).

  • Be results-first, using metrics, impact, or scope whenever available.

Provide three variations of the statement, each with a different emphasis:

  1. Leadership-focused – highlights initiative, collaboration, or strategic direction.

  2. Efficiency-focused – emphasizes process improvement, cost savings, or productivity gains.

  3. Innovation-focused – showcases creativity, problem-solving, or data-driven insight.

Input: [Paste bullet point(s), project description, or notes here]

Example format:

“Cut project delivery time by 25% by implementing a streamlined cross-functional workflow, improving client satisfaction and team throughput.”
